Ms. April Powell is a graduate of Snow Hill High School who currently serves as a Special Education teacher for 6th graders at Berlin Intermediate School. She earned two Associate degrees from Wor-Wic Community College and a Bachelor's degree from UMES. Currently, she is working towards her Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Phoenix. “I became a teacher because I want to show students that someone who looks like them can be in this role. I believe that it doesn't matter when or how you start; the important thing is to begin and keep going. Don't set strict timelines for your success!”

In celebration of Black History Month, each day Snow Hill High School we will spotlight and celebrate the achievements of Worcester County’s African Americans educators. Today, we honor Mr. Derrick Fooks. Serving in his 31st year of teaching, Mr. Derrick Fooks is a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School and is currently the Athletic Director, Physical Education teacher and head Boys’ Basketball Coach at Pocomoke High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and a Master of Education in School Counseling from Wilmington University. In the words of Mr. Fooks, “I have always enjoyed working with kids through coaching and mentoring, but the main reason that I went into education is to make a difference in young people’s lives.” His words of wisdom: if you go into education for money, then choose another profession. If you want to make a difference in a child’s life, TEACH.
