The UniverSoul Circus is a high-energy, interactive circus that celebrates African American culture and diversity through a unique blend of music, dance, and acrobatics. Founded in 1994 by Cedric Walker, an entrepreneur from Baltimore, the circus showcases performers from around the world, including Africa, the Caribbean, South America, and Asia.
Unlike traditional circuses, UniverSoul Circus incorporates hip-hop, R&B, gospel, and soul music, making it a one-of-a-kind experience rooted in Black culture and urban entertainment. The show features acrobats, contortionists, clowns, dancers, animal acts, and audience participation, creating an immersive and engaging atmosphere.
Since its debut in Atlanta, Georgia, the UniverSoul Circus has grown into a globally recognized show, touring major U.S. cities and beyond. It is celebrated for promoting inclusivity, cultural pride, and family-friendly entertainment while redefining the traditional circus experience.

Josephine Holloway was determined to bring the Girl Scout experience to girls at a local women’s shelter, and in 1924, she made that vision a reality. By the end of the year, more than 300 girls were participating in Girl Scout-inspired activities.
Nearly a decade later, in 1933, she took her first steps toward forming an official troop for African American girls. However, her request was initially denied. But perseverance is at the heart of Girl Scouting, and Josephine refused to give up. In 1942, after years of dedication, she successfully established the region’s first African American Girl Scout troop.
With decades of experience advocating for girls, including attending a training led by Juliette Gordon Low (founder) herself, Josephine became a respected community leader and an expert on girls’ development. She was later hired as a field advisor for Black troops, a role in which she remained until her retirement in 1963. During her tenure, she supported and supervised more than 2,000 African American girls and adults.
Today, Camp Holloway stands in her honor as a place where girls of all races, religions, and backgrounds come together to build friendships, explore, and experience the power of learning and leading as one.

William H. Richardson is often recognized for his invention and patent of the baby carriage. In 1848, he patented a design for a lightweight, horse-drawn baby carriage, which was a significant advancement in infant transportation. His design emphasized both comfort for the child and convenience for the parent.
Richardson’s innovation allowed for a more practical and stylish way to transport babies outdoors, contributing to the popularity of baby carriages in Victorian society. This invention paved the way for the development of modern strollers and baby carriages that we see today. If you’re interested in more details about his invention or its impact on parenting, feel free to ask!

Daniel Hale Williams was a pioneering surgeon best known for performing one of the world’s first successful open-heart surgeries in 1893. He founded Provident Hospital in Chicago, the first Black-owned and operated hospital in the U.S., which also trained Black nurses and doctors at a time when many medical institutions barred African Americans.
Williams was a trailblazer in sterile surgical techniques, significantly improving patient survival rates. He later became a member of the American College of Surgeons, one of the first Black physicians to do so. His contributions greatly advanced both medicine and racial equality in healthcare.

Today, we had the honor of hosting Commander Anthony Mumford and Vice Commander James Jones, Jr. from the NABVETS (National Association for Black Veterans). They shared their military experiences, life journeys and highlighted the ways NABVETS supports local veterans. It was an engaging discussion moderated by our MJROTC Platoon Leader, Cadet Staff Sergeant Matthew St. Pierre, that provided valuable insights for our students. #BlackHistoryMonth #AfricanAmericansandLabor
